SWEDISH VS GUSTAVIAN VS SCANDINAVIANI'm always a little confused between what is Scandinavian, Swedish or Gustavian design. Well, isn't Scandinavia made of Sweden, Norway & Denmark? So that means, not only Swedish design is Scandinavian but Norwegian & Danish designs as well.
Have you heard of
IKEA? Ha!Ha! Maybe? You've heard of it somewhere. The most popular Scandinavian Design is known for minimalism, simplicity, low-cost design and mass production with the idea that beautiful and functional objects should both be affordable & stylish.
So, if Scandinavian is the contemporary designs & furniture of our times, Swedish style decorating is all about pale, light, airy vignettes that mimics the long winters of Sweden. It's calm and cozy. The style was popularized by Carl Larsson in the late 1800's and early 1900's.
And Gustavian? Well, it's Swedish as well but a little older. Popular in the 1700's to the 1800's with monarchs, it's all about neoclassical style. It was the reign of Gustav III {and really all along, I thought there was a town in Sweden named Gustav where Gustavian furniture is made---there may really be a town though named after him}. They're also pale and airy, has a bit of the French
Rococo influence but with simpler lines.
I saw this post about a
Gustavian Style Home in France, I fell in love with the images that I just had to share them:
You probably haven't asked yourself what's the difference between the three but I so love it when I get curious & find the answers & be able to share them! Thanks
Wikipedia! Oh & thanks to Kifus for letting me borrow these images.
